Atabo from Kenya

Name:  Atabo

Date of Birth:  17th July 2013

Date of Contact:  July 2013

Location:  Turkana, Kenya

Condition:  Spina bifida (a congenital developmental disorder of the spine and spinal cord which leaves a gap in the spine – “split spine”)

Operation:  Spina bifida is a condition that can be treated surgically, but time is of the essence, as infection of the area can get into the spinal fluid and cause meningitis and death. Turkana is an extremely poor region, and Atabo’s case could not be handled in the region due to a lack of proper hospital facilities. As such, she was referred to Kijabe where she had successful surgery by Dr Leland Albright at Cure International Hospital in the beginning of August 2013.

Current Needs & Updates: Atabo has returned home and is doing well – feeding well and growing. She does has some weakness of the legs, which is a known complication of this condition. She is due to go back to Kijabe for her post-op check up mid-November.
